Defined Benefit Pension Plan
Accumulated Benefit Obligation is based on the number of years worked and the current wage. It represents the liability today if the plan were closed or converted.
The Projected Benefit Obligation estimated the workers wage at retirement to determine the liability. It is the liability reported in financial statements.
The portfolio manager must decide which liability measure is relevant for the portfolio. A going concern should usually use PBO.
